THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Migration of India Post offices in the state into core banking solutions (CBS) will be complete soon. Of the total 1,508 post offices in the Kerala Circle, including 51 head post offices, 1,480 have become part of the CBS network. Officials said the remaining 28 will join the scheme shortly thereby achieving a milestone in the Postal Department’s motto of “anywhere anytime banking”.
The 1,508 India Post offices and 3,560 branch offices in the state together have 12 crore accounts, of which 65.91 lakh are savings bank accounts.
The CBS enables customers to operate their accounts and avail banking services from any post office on the CBS network regardless of where they maintain their account. In short, the customer is no more the customer of a particular post office.
CBS is part of the India Post’s efforts to provide innovative customer-centric services in banking and money remittance.
30 ATMs Opened
The department has also opened 30 ATMs in the state against a target of 56. The ATMs, now used by postal savings bank account holders, will become inter-operable soon. “Inter-operable debit cards will help our customers to use all ATMs part of the banking network. Internet banking and mobile banking are also on cards,” officials said.
At present SB account holders in post offices part of the CBS network are given SMS alerts for withdrawals and credits above a fixed amount. Officials said the second phase of modernisation will see 3,560 branch offices joining the CBS network by March next year. With this, the postal department will become the biggest banking network in the state. The various accounts in India Post offices, including savings bank, has been witnessing a steady growth over the years. The number of SB accounts as on 31 March 2016 is 65,911,04 as against the 60,934,41 in the previous year.
