The anniversary of Vijay Divas is observed across India by paying tributes to the martyrs who laid down their lives for the nation. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar along with the three service chiefs today paid tributes to the martyrs at the Amar Jawan Jyoti. On this day, nation remembers martyrs, who laid down their lives during Indo-Pak War of 1971. It was the first major victory for a young Indian democracy and helped strengthen the confidence of the leadership and population. On 16 December 1971, Chief of Pakistan forces General Niazi, along with 93000 troops surrendered unconditionally to the allied forces consisting of Indian Army and Mukti Bahini, after the defeat of Pakistan in the war. This war resulted in subsequent secession of East Pakistan into Bangladesh.
