International Anti-Corruption Day

Message for the 2015 International Anti-Corruption Day:
"The new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, our plan to end poverty and ensure lives of dignity for all, recognizes the need to fight corruption in all its aspects and calls for significant reductions in illicit financial flows as well as for the recovery of stolen assets. " - Ban Ki-moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Here are some interesting facts about the day:
  • The day has been observed annually since the passage of the United Nations Convention against Corruption on October 31, 2003
  • On October 31, 2003, the General Assembly adopted the United Nations Convention against Corruption and requested that the Secretary-General to designate the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) as a secretariat for the Convention's conference of state parties
  • To raise awareness on corruption and on the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it, the Assembly designated December 9 as an International Anti-Corruption Day. However, the Convention entered into force in December 2005
  • With an aim to fight this crime, governments, the private sector, non-governmental organisations, media and the citizens around the world are joining forces. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) are at the forefront of these efforts
  • The 2015 joint international campaign focuses on how corruption undermines democracy and the rule of law, leading to human rights' violation, markets' distortion, eroding the quality of life and allowing organised crime, terrorism and other threats to human security, to flourish
  • December 9, 2006 was the first International Anti-Corruption Day observed in India, signing the UN Convention against corruption.
